The Pinque génoise (Genoese Pinque) was a distinctive Mediterranean merchant sailing vessel widely used from the late 18th to the early 19th century. Known for its broad beam, shallow draft, and elevated stern, this versatile cargo ship played an important role in coastal and regional trade throughout the Mediterranean.

Materials & Construction

The kit includes a carefully selected combination of premium materials:

  • Pre-cut cherry wood strips and dowels
  • 3D printed inner hull sections for easier planking and assembly
  • 3D printed decorative details
  • Photo-etched brass parts
  • Linden wood display cradle and support stand

The use of a pre-formed 3D printed inner hull significantly reduces construction complexity while maintaining the appearance and authenticity of a traditional plank-built vessel.

Historical Background

The Genoese Pinque was one of the most recognizable merchant vessels operating throughout the Mediterranean during the late Age of Sail.

Its defining characteristics included:

  • Broad and stable hull design
  • Relatively flat bottom and shallow draft
  • Raised stern structure
  • Three-masted rig configuration
  • Primarily equipped with lateen sails

Depending on weather conditions and operational needs, Pinques could sail using:

  • Traditional Mediterranean lateen sails,
  • Square sails,
  • Or a combination of both rigging systems.

These ships were commonly employed to transport bulk cargo such as olive oil, agricultural products, and regional trade goods. Typical carrying capacities ranged from 200 to 300 tons.

Although designed primarily for commerce, some vessels were occasionally fitted with small cannons during periods of conflict, serving as armed merchantmen or privateering platforms when necessary.
